Churchwardens Accounts from 17801

Account books show rates payable for ‘The Hearth’ and ‘Temples Close’ – land within Woodhall Manor. Rates were paid by Mr Bellars for his farm and for Temples Close and for The Hearth (Heath) . The farm at Woodgate End in Helpston was bought in 1793 by John Clark as sitting tenant and inherited by William and John Clark after their father’s death in 1802. Mrs Clark takes over the charges from 1805 – 40.

Sale on the premises of Mrs. J E Clarke, Helpstone:

  • 2 useful cart mares, handsome blood filly
  • 3 strong carts, harness, dogcart
  • Well-used boar
  • Ploughs, harrows, and implements
  • About 7 acres of tares and hay
  • Stack of straw about 5 tons
  • Excellent crop of about 1 ½ acres of swedes, turnips and mangleworzels
  • The building of 2 lime kilns, a stone quarry etc.
