Rim of flagon

In summer 2022, whilst removing an old shrub before preparing a new flowering bed, the gardeners hit upon stone works which haltered their progress.

Excavation

Curiosity took hold, and volunteers have helped remove the soil revealing stone works that are very similar in style to the base of the ‘village cross’ at the junction of Woodgate and the centre of the village.
An archaeologist has suggested, ‘The stonework , especially that neatly laid on edge, looks to have formed a pathway and perhaps the edge of a building of some kind – its typical of what people were laying in the medieval and post medieval period’.

Findings

During the removal of the soil, various findings have come to light. The items have been collated and are now boxed and labelled for viewing. They range from pottery and items from the mid 1900s back to a sherd of a rim from a flagon, possibly medieval.
