Woodgate looking south c.1905

This is an old postcard looking south on Woodgate about 1905. The photographer was standing on the east side of the street outside the house known as The Old Rectory. The postcard was published by C H Clow of The Post Office, Helpston.

Properties on the west side

In the foreground of the old postcard, is a house with a barn attached which no longer stands. In the 2022 photo, the modern houses that replaced it are seen.

Next, is The Blue Bell public house, then Clare Cottage. As in street scene 1, on the old postcard, there are two front doors visible, showing the building was still divided into separate properties at the time. Two semi-detached houses can be seen next to Clare Cottage.  The current entrance to the visitors’ centre occupies the area where they once stood. Further along in the older view, is the sign for The Royal Oak beer house, now a private property.

Properties on the east side

Foliage obscures properties on the east side of the street (somewhat more of it in the 2022 view). In the distance No.17, Woodgate (Bachelors’ Hall) can be identified from its’ chimneys and its’ associated barn, set further forward right onto the street.
